Postal service to collect food donations
Mail carriers in Hawaii and across the country will collect food donations Saturday to "Stamp Out Hunger."
Residents are encouraged to put nonperishable food items next to their mailboxes Saturday for the 20th annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Food Drive. The U.S. Postal Service aims to help combat hunger by supporting community groups such as the Hawaii Foodbank.
Last year about 1,000 Hawaii mail carriers collected more than 490,000 pounds of food. Carriers nationwide collected a total of 70.2 million pounds of food.
Post offices without residential delivery will also be collecting items this week.
The most desired donations are canned meats, tuna, soup, canned fruits and vegetables, and meals such as spaghetti.
Dole Street lane to close for dorm moves
Officials will close the curbside Kaimuki-bound lane of Dole Street in front of Johnson Hall this week to use as a temporary loading zone for students moving from the dormitories, the University of Hawaii at Manoa announced.
The closing will take place today from 1 to 4 p.m., and Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Students from the nearby Frear Hall residence also will be moving out Wednesday through Saturday, but the Frear Hall loading zone is not on Dole Street. UH asks people attending Saturday’s commencement ceremonies to avoid parking in the Frear Hall area.
Hiker, rescuers OK after night in Kauai valley
A California man who fell while hiking the Hanakapiai Trail on Monday — and the four Kauai firefighters who rescued him — were airlifted from the area early Tuesday morning after spending the night in the valley.
Firefighters were summoned at about 7 p.m. Monday after the 23-year-old man reportedly fell and hit his head while hiking near the falls.
The fire rescue helicopter had only enough time to drop two Rescue 3 specialists into the valley before nightfall forced the aircraft to head back. Two firefighters from the Hanalei station also hiked in from the trail head to assist. The four rescuers provided aid to the hiker and stayed with him overnight until the helicopter could return to the scene Tuesday morning.
The hiker was airlifted to Princeville Airport, where awaiting medics took him to Wilcox Hospital. Information on his condition was not available.
Frauds who call cardholders ask for security code
Hawaii County police are warning the public about a credit card scam.
A caller claims to be from a credit card company asking about a questionable charge to the person’s credit card. The caller provides the correct card number, the name of the issuing bank and the cardholder’s address, and asks the cardholder to provide the three-digit security code on the back of the card, police said Monday.
The scammer is able to then charge items using the cardholder’s security code.
Police advise the public to hang up if they get a call like this and to call the credit card company directly, using the phone number on the credit card rather than one provided by the caller.
