1. HAWAII (43-5, 17-3)
Head coach: Bob Coolen
NCAA RPI: 20
UH ranks 10th nationally with 6.38 runs per game and hit 32 of its league-high 70 home runs in WAC play, but has also shown an ability to manufacture runs by moving runners over, taking the extra base and stealing 31 bases on 38 attempts. The Rainbow Wahine have also backed up the pitching staff by posting a WAC-best fielding percentage of .972, reducing their total errors to 37 from 54 last year.
2. BRIGHAM YOUNG (40-13, 15-4)
Head coach: Gordon Eakin
NCAA RPI: 35
The Cougars finished just behind UH in their one-year stopover in the league before joining the Pacific Coast Softball Conference in 2013. Delaney Willard led the WAC in hitting (.436) and home runs (18) and her 83 RBIs broke the conference’s single-season record. Campbell graduate Katie Manuma is hitting. 333 with seven home runs. Pitchers Tori Almond (17-3, 2.17) and Hannah Howell (18-7, 2.49) helped BYU win 16 of its last 17 games.
3. FRESNO STATE (33-21, 13-6)
Head coach: Margie Wright
NCAA RPI: 63
Wright announced she will retire in June to cap a storied 27-year tenure leading the Bulldogs, who may need a strong showing this week to extend the program’s string of 30 NCAA tournament appearances. Fresno State finished lower than second in the WAC standings for the first time since 1995. Senior Michelle Moses ranks second in the league in pitching victories (21) and home runs (16).
4. SAN JOSE STATE (27-26, 9-10)
Head coach: Peter Turner
NCAA RPI: 94
The Spartans’ tournament fortunes rest largely on the arm of pitcher Amanda Pridmore. The senior went 17-13, ranks third in the WAC with a 1.94 ERA and earned the decision in 20 of the Spartans’ last 25 games. She threw 96 innings in WAC games with 85 strikeouts. Michelle Cox has led the SJSU offense by hitting .366 and stealing 26 bases in 29 attempts.
5. NEVADA (21-34, 9-12)
Head coach: Matt Meuchel
NCAA RPI: 128
The Wolf Pack went 8-20 to begin the season, but earned a return to the WAC tournament after finishing last in the league the previous two years. Mallary Darby (10-16, 3.83) has carried the bulk of the pitching load while Karlyn Jones went 5-1 with a save and issued just three walks in WAC play. Karley Hopkins leads the Pack in hitting at .328 and Lauren Lastrapes is hitting .302 with a team-best 31 RBIs.
6. LOUISIANA TECH (23-31, 8-12)
Head coach: Sarah Dawson
NCAA RPI: 159
Shortstop/pitcher Melanie Goff’s .377 performance in WAC play was a highlight for an offense hitting a collective .237 overall and .223 in conference games. Michelle Jones (14-15, 2.54) leads the Lady Techsters’ pitching staff. First baseman Meghan Knowles’ seventh-inning home run gave LaTech a win at Fresno State to close the regular season last Saturday.
