UH wins 6 more WAC track, field medals
The University of Hawaii women’s track and field team picked up six more medals Friday en route to a fifth-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Moscow, Idaho.
It was UH’s highest finish at the WAC outdoor meet, setting a school record with 111.5 points and 10 total medals. The previous records were 105.5 points and nine medals set in 2009.
Senior TeRina Keenan captured her third consecutive discus title with a personal best of 179 feet, 2 inches. Keenan, who has five career WAC medals, won a silver in the shot put on Thursday.
UH picked up two medals in the triple jump as senior Madara Apine (41-1.5) and sophomore Amanda Alvarez (40-3.25) took gold and bronze, respectively. Senior Emma MacCorquodale won a bronze in the hammer throw (188-11); senior Ashley Aitken won bronze in the 1500-meter run (4:35.19), and Zhane Santiago, a freshman from Kahuku High, won bronze in the 100-meter hurdles (14.28). Two other Rainbow Wahine also competed in the hurdles, with junior Samantha Esperanza placing fifth (14.51) and junior Samantha Balentine seventh (14.67).
In the high jump, defending champion and reigning WAC indoor silver medalist Sarah Saddleton won silver with a season-best mark of 5-8, which will likely qualify her for regionals. Balentine pulled out of the event to compete in the hurdles. She still finished fifth (5-5.75).
Utah State won the team title with 148.5 points followed by host Idaho (133.5), Louisiana Tech (129), Fresno State (115), UH, New Mexico State (102), and Nevada (76.5).
