Nelson wins U.S. Open local qualifier
Shooting a 3-under 69 on Sunday at the King Kamehameha Golf Club in Wailuku, Kirk Nelson of Kihei defeated 36 competitors to receive a qualifying spot in the U.S. Open sectional qualifier.
Also receiving a sectional spot was Garrett Okamura of Wailuku, who shot an even-par 72.
Both Nelson and Okamura advanced to one of 11 36-hole sectional qualifiers.
This local qualifier is one of 111 conducted across the country by the United States Golf Association.
