East Tennessee replaces Texas Tech in DHC
East Tennessee State has stepped in to replace Texas Tech in the 2012 field of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, according to tournament executive director David A.K. Matlin.
Texas Tech of the Big 12 bowed out because of a "scheduling issue," Matlin said.
Texas Tech went 8-23 last season, including 1-17 in Big 12 play. ETSU of the Atlantic Sun Conference went 17-14.
The fourth edition of the tournament, to be played Dec. 22, 23 and 25 at the Stan Sheriff Center, now has host Hawaii, Arizona, Miami (Fla.), San Diego State, Ole Miss, Indiana State, San Francisco and ETSU. First-round pairings will be announced later.
Family to scatter Ganigan’s ashes in Ewa
Services for former world lightweight boxing champion Andy Ganigan will be held May 26 at St. Joseph Church in Waipahu, a family spokesperson said.
Public visitation will be from 8 to 9 a.m., followed by a program and eulogy (9-9:30 a.m.), mass (9:30-10:30 a.m.) and fellowship (10:30 a.m.).
The scattering of ashes will be at 2 p.m., May 27 at Hau Bush (One‘ula Beach Park) in Ewa Beach. The family said ashes will be scattered off-shore from a catamaran, but the public is welcome to paddle out or join ceremonies on land.
A "Friends of Andy Ganigan" account has been set up at Bank of Hawaii. The public may send condolences to the family at P.O. Box 894169, Mililani, HI 96789.
Ganigan, who was 59, died May 2 in Las Vegas, two years after an assault in his hometown of Waipahu left him severely debilitated.
Ganigan was a boxing sensation in the 1970s and ’80s, with a 34-5 record, including 30 knockouts and a lightweight division championship. He was named to Ring magazine’s list of "100 Greatest Punchers of All-Time" in 2003, 20 years after he retired.
