Hawaii players get NCAA softball title
Mililani product Glenelle Nitta and Lindsey Matsunaga of Kaimuki held down the middle infield in Pacific Lutheran’s 3-0 win over Linfield to capture the NCAA Division III national softball championship at Salem, Va., on Monday.
Nitta, the second baseman, went 0-for-2 from the second spot in the order and Matsunaga, the shortstop, went 0-for-2 from the seventh spot and both players had successful sacrifice bunts.
Kylee Oshiro (Moanalua) and Tori Hamura (Mid-Pacific) are also on the team.
Frowein, LaPenes win national medals
Two Hawaiian Island Twisters gymnasts won medals at the USA Junior Olympics National Championships in Hampton, Va., on May 12.
Jenna Frowein, a Punahou senior bound for Stanford, placed 10th on the balance beam in the senior D division.
Amanda LaPenes, an eighth-grader from Kahuku, placed ninth on the vault in the junior C division.
