Maui police arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with an auto theft that resulted in the shooting death of a 31-year-old Wailuku man Tuesday afternoon at a Kihei resort.

The 28-year-old, also of Wailuku, surrendered to police at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Police were holding him at the Wailuku police station on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, while the investigation continues.

Criminal Investigation Division Acting Capt. Peter Delima said police had a tentative identification of the 28-year-old suspect before he turned himself in.

An 18-year veteran police officer, who had responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at the resort, shot and killed Marshall M.K. Langford after Langford allegedly pointed a gun at the officer in the parking lot of the Mana Kai Maui resort, police said.

Police would not release Wednesday how many times Langford was shot or how many times the officer fired his duty weapon.

Langford had a conviction record for car break-ins and petty and misdemeanor theft.

Police had been searching for a second suspect, who had reportedly left the car and gone into the hotel.

Delima said he did not know how it was known the car, a dark blue Chevrolet Impala, was at the Mana Kai Maui resort, but it had been reported stolen from a rental car company and it was spotted heading into Kihei hours earlier.

The Maui News reported it was stolen from Alamo Rent A Car’s baseyard at the Kahului Airport, and was last seen May 7. Alamo employees said the company is not answering questions on the car theft.
