More than 12,000 walkers put their best foot forward and raised $1,371,955 for more than 200 nonprofits statewide in the recent Visitor Industry Charity Walk.
The annual event, which has raised more than $24 million for Hawaii charities since its inception in 1978, set a fundraising record for the second year in a row.
"This is a great day for Hawaii’s nonprofits and the individuals who will benefit from this record-setting gesture by the people and friends of our visitor industry," said Jerry Gibson, this year’s Charity Walk chairman and area vice president and managing director of Hilton Hawaii. "It’s an unprecedented outpouring of kindness and kokua that exemplifies our aloha spirit. A big mahalo to all of the thousands of folks who participated and gave so generously."
Across the state, 12,412 walkers on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai and Hawaii island participated in the fundraiser, which is sponsored by the Hawai‘i Lodging & Tourism Association. Maui, which had 2,500 walkers, raised the most funds of any of the islands for the second consecutive year with $530,123, a record for the island. The Grand Wailea resort alone raised $100,001.
Oahu, which had the most walkers at 6,300, brought in the second-highest amount at $471,000 with the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort raising more than $125,000, which included two Charity Walk benefit concerts on its Great Lawn.
Among the other islands, Hawaii island raised $194,266, Kauai brought in $151,551, Lanai raised $14,899 and Molokai generated $10,116.
On Oahu, following breakfast provided by the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa, walkers set off at 7 a.m. from Ala Moana Beach Park’s McCoy Pavilion and continued on a 6-mile trek through Waikiki, along the Ala Wai Canal, through Waikiki Beach Walk and back to McCoy Pavilion.
Mufi Hannemann, president of HLTA, said setting a fundraising record for the second year in a row is "a wonderful statement on how much HLTA and our visitor industry care about helping our community."
"A lot of heart goes into this event by Hawaii’s lodging industry and other members of our tourism community," Hannemann said. "We’re happy to know that the results of our collective efforts will make a positive difference to the hundreds of nonprofits that support people in need across the state."
The Oahu Charity Walk was held Saturday, while walks on Maui, Kauai and Hawaii island took place May 12 and the walks on Molokai and Lanai were held May 5.
