Swept into sea, men prove able to return to land
Two men made it back to shore with minor injuries Sunday after being swept into the ocean near Oheo Gulch in Hana, Maui.
Fire rescue personnel responded to the 5:07 p.m. call to the area, also known as the Seven Sacred Pools, but park rangers told them that both men made it back to shore by 5:25 p.m.
The two men, in their mid-20s, suffered scrapes and cuts but declined medical attention.
Mamalahoa Highway work to start in July
The state will spend $600,000 for safety improvements to Mamalahoa Highway in the Puuwaawaa area of Hawaii island.
The improvements, scheduled to begin in July and be completed in December 2014, will include an underground drainage system to keep rain runoff from flowing across the highway. The system will include drain lines, grated drop inlets and a drainage basin. Related improvements in the area include a retaining wall and a realignment of the roadway to improve safety.
