Increased aircraft noise expected due to Kahului runway work

Maui residents in the Kahului, Wailuku and Spreckelsville areas will experience increased air traffic overhead this weekend because Runway 2-20 at Kahului Airport will be closed for airfield maintenance work, the state Department of Transportation said.

The runway will be closed from 11:30 p.m. today to 5 a.m. Saturday morning, and from 11:30 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday.

During this time, flight patterns will be modified, resulting in increased air traffic over Kahului, Wailuku and Spreckelsville, the department said.

The $1.14 million, federally funded project will include a complete re-wiring of the runway lights and taxiway light circuits, and replacing taxiway lights with energy-efficient LED lights.
