8 from UH honored for academics
Five members of the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball team and three from the women’s water polo team earned Mountain Pacific Sports Federation all-academic honors.
Warriors setter Sam Biscaro is a two-time honoree, while libero Nick Castello, middle blocker Jarrod Lofy, and opposites Taylor Averill and Johann Timmer were recognized for the first time.
Biscaro started all 27 matches last season and ranked 17th nationally in assists per set at 10.11; Castello started all 55 matches of his two-year career and posted a 2.28-digs-per-set average in 2012; Lofy started 25 matches with averages of 0.91 kills and 0.91 blocks per set; Averill started 13 matches and averaged 1.65 kills and 0.92 digs per set; and Timmer started the first six matches of the season and missed the latter half because of injury.
The three UH women’s water polo players were Amarens Genee, Monique Wilson and Danielle Lewis. Genee and Wilson were recognized for the second time.
Genee led the Rainbow Wahine with 57 goals this past season and was named second-team All-MPSF; Wilson participated in all 25 matches and scored 12 goals; and Lewis also played in every match and led the team with 23 assists, while recording five multiple-goal matches.
The criteria included maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average or better, being at least a sophomore academically, having completed one full academic year and having played in 50 percent or more of the team’s matches.
MPI’s Garcia-Perreira honored by Gatorade
Mid-Pacific senior Travis Garcia-Perreira has been named the Gatorade Hawaii Baseball Player of the Year.
Garcia-Perreira pitched and played at first base and in the outfield.
The left-hander posted a 4-2 record with a 1.74 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 401⁄3 innings. He also batted .490 with 17 RBIs and a .647 slugging percentage.
Garcia-Perreira, who will attend Arizona Western College, has maintained a 3.02 GPA. He also has volunteered at the Special Olympics, and served as a youth baseball coach and elementary school motivational speaker.
The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character.
UH women in final of sailing nationals
The University of Hawaii women’s sailing team is in 15th place in the final round of the Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA National Championship at Lake Travis outside of Austin, Texas.
The Rainbow Wahine placed seventh among nine teams in the semifinal round on Thursday. The finals began shortly thereafter and Hawaii compiled 75 points through the first six races. Boston College leads the final round with 21 points.
A total of 30 races are scheduled over the next two days.
Sailing for the Rainbow Wahine are Madeline Kennedy, Lani Johnson, Lindsay Stewart, Hanne Nagatani and Bree Nidds. Hawaii is competing in the nationals for the 13th time in the last 15 seasons.
UH women’s hoops camp June 8-10
The first Rainbow Wahine basketball camp under new Hawaii coach Laura Beeman will be held June 8-10 at the Manoa lower campus for males and females ages 5 through 18.
The camp will focus on fundamental instruction from the UH coaching staff and feature daily competition and guest speakers.
The three-day camp costs $25 with a T-shirt provided. The 5-12 age group session is from 9 a.m. to noon on each day, while the 12-18 age bracket goes from 1 to 4 p.m.
Walk-up registration and payment on the first day will be inside the Stan Sheriff Center security gate an hour before each respective age group begins. Forms are available at hawaiiathletics.com.

Chaminade men’s hoops signs 4
The Chaminade men’s basketball team signed four players for the 2012-13 season.
Rhys Murphy, who is 6 feet 7, is a transfer from Oregon State. He will be a redshirt junior.
Tyree Harrison, a 6-8 forward, is from Citrus College in Glendora, Calif. He averaged eight points and eight rebounds per game for a 28-2 Citrus team last season.
Michael Green, a 6-6 forward, is a transfer from Akron. The Dublin, Ohio, native will be a redshirt sophomore.
Long-Mao (Kevin) Hu, a 6-5 forward, is from Taipei. He completed in the Nike Global Challenge in 2010 and the 2011 U-19 FIBA Basketball Championships.
Fujikawa, Cyr miss cut on eGolf Tour
Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa and Samuel Cyr of Makawao, Maui, both missed the cut on Thursday at the eGolf Tour’s HGM Hotels Classic at Conover, N.C.
Fujikawa, who shot a 2-under 70 in the second round for a 143 total, missed the cut by one stroke.
Cyr shot consecutive even-par 72s for a 144 total.
Leader George Bryan IV, of Chapin, S.C., is at 11-under 133.
