Bystander rescues toddler who jumped into Hawaii Kai pool

A bystander rescued a 2-year-old girl today after she nearly drowned in a Hawaii Kai pool, firefighters said.

Honolulu fire Capt. Gary Lum said the girl had apparently jumped into the pool at the Peninsula at Hawaii Kai residential complex at 520 Lunalilo Home Road, and went underwater about 2:20 p.m. A bystander pulled her out and performed CPR on her for several minutes.

Two fire companies responded within minutes and found the child conscious and in her mother’s arms, Lum said.

Paramedics took the girl to the hospital in serious condition, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.
