Koko Crater Stables lets families explore
Koko Crater Stables is offering a free open house on June 9 for families who want to learn about horses and horsemanship.
From 10 a.m. to noon, visitors will get guided tours of the stalls and an introduction to the more than 20 horses that live there. Children will be allowed to pet and feed the animals. Punch and cookies will be served.
"They’ll be introduced to each one and taught a little bit about how to understand horses," said Emogene Yoshimura of Koko Crater Stables. "I think people are surprised at how such a big animal can be so friendly. The other comment that I’ve heard is that their eyes are so big."
Koko Crater Stables is also offering a summer introductory package of four one-hour lessons for $100; a four-day intensive day camp that includes instruction in feeding, grooming and tacking as well as riding; and an "Equine Boot Camp" that includes running, swimming, hiking, tennis and other activities as well as horsemanship activities.
The stables are located at 408 Kealahoa St. in Hawaii Kai. Visit kokocraterstables.net or call 395-2628 for information.

The aquarium’s summer fun continues with the popular concert series "Ke Kani o Ke Kai: The Sound of the Ocean," featuring musical performances on the lawn at sunset on Thursdays from June 14 to Aug. 9. Proceeds will help fund a hands-on laboratory focused on ocean conservation.
