Wahine sailing team in 15th place
The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine sailing team remained in 15th place following the second day of the Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA Women’s National Championship finals Friday at Lake Travis outside of Austin, Texas.
A lack of wind forced a 4-hour delay in competition as teams completed just six races, two in the A division and four in the B division.
UH’s total is 147 points, with 65 coming in the A division and 82 in the B division. Sailing for the Rainbow Wahine are Madeline Kennedy, Lani Johnson, Lindsay Stewart, Hanne Nagatani and Bree Nidds. The regatta ends today.
Ricketts named to Lowe’s first team
University of Hawaii pitcher Stephanie Ricketts was named a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award first-team All-American on Friday, becoming the first Rainbow Wahine to be so honored.
Ricketts was one of 10 finalists for the top award, which was given to California’s Valerie Arioto on Friday at the Women’s College World Series. Arioto and the All-America teams were chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I softball head coaches, national media and fans. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence — community, classroom, character and competition.
Earlier this month, Ricketts was named to the CoSIDA Academic third team and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association second team. Ricketts earned her bachelor’s degree in four years from UH in psychology, and has been accepted into the University of Hawaii’s master’s of nursing program for next year.
