Shane Brostek enjoyed several firsts in his senior season.
He earned first-team All-State recognition for his efforts on Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s offensive line in the fall. This spring, Brostek again finished first in the shot put at the state track and field championships, picking up a third gold medal of his career.
He closes his high school career with induction into the HHSAA Hall of Honor, making him the first father-son honoree in the Hall’s 30-year history.
Bern Brostek was part of the 1985 class of inductees as a standout lineman at ‘Iolani. Like his father, Shane excelled in football and in the throwing events in track to earn a spot in this year’s group.
"I love everything he did for me," Shane said, "because anything I need to know I can just go to him and he’s always pushing me in the weight room like nobody else does. I’m so grateful for that."
Shane didn’t have the opportunity to play organized football until just before entering high school due to the size restrictions enforced by Pop Warner football. Once he was given the chance to put on the pads, he put his power to use on both sides of the line of scrimmage.
He was a three-time first-team All-Big Island Interscholastic Federation selection and a third-team All-State pick as a junior. He made the first team his senior year and ranked among the state’s top college prospects. He signed with Washington, the school Bern played for before embarking on his NFL career. "That was always the dream," Shane said of earning a college scholarship.
Though football was his primary sport, Brostek’s potential in track and field was evident early. He qualified for the state championships as a freshman and placed third in the shot put and fourth in the discus as a sophomore. He won both events as a junior and won another gold in the shot put and a silver in the discus as a senior.
