Ever meet someone and wonder how they can be so nice? Many have that experience when talking with Uncle Clay of Uncle Clay’s House of Pure Aloha, or HOPA, where shave ice is topped with fresh syrup made from local produce.
How does Uncle sustain his aloha spirit? Doesn’t the bottom-line reality of the biz ever get him down? It seems Uncle Clay and business partner/nephew Bronson Chang have figured out a way to blend business with personal values in their Share-HOPA-Forward campaign, launching Saturday to mark the shop’s first anniversary.
They’re asking the community to "pay it forward," meaning in this case to do a good deed by purchasing a shave ice for a stranger. The goal is to raise enough funds by year’s end to share 2,012 shave ice.
"We want to promote sharing and generosity to bring the community together," said Chang. "We want to build our business according to our values."
He said HOPA will host Sharing Days to gift people with shave ice.
A donation of $3 funds one frozen treat; the goal is to raise $6,036. Donations can be made at HOPA at Aina Haina Shopping Center, or via the shop’s Indiegogo page, www.indiegogo.com/ShareHOPAForward. Call 373-5111 or visit www.houseofpurealoha.com.
