Sailor dies after going overboard from Pearl destroyer off Oahu

A 32-year-old sailor from the Pearl Harbor-based USS Russell died Wednesday afternoon after falling overboard while the guided-missile destroyer was conducting operations 50 miles off the coast of Oahu.

The Navy said the sailor was a 2nd class petty officer who first reported to the Russell in January 2009. The destroyer had returned from a western Pacific deployment in April.

The Navy was not disclosing the sailor’s name until relatives were notified. The Navy said a formal investigation into the incident is being conducted.

The sailor was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m. after being recovered from the ocean by the ship’s search-and-rescue swimmer.

The Navy said the destroyer’s crew responded to a man-overboard alarm about 5:30 p.m. while conducting operations. The sailor was unconscious and not breathing when recovered from the ocean about 15 minutes later.

CPR was administered to no avail.
