Sailor who died in fall overboard identified
The Navy on Friday identified the sailor who died after going overboard from a Pearl Harbor-based destroyer as Troy Hunter, 32, of Pembroke Pines, Fla.
Hunter was a culinary specialist second-class petty officer, the Navy said.
Hunter went overboard from the USS Russell at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday while the destroyer was conducting operations about 50 miles off the coast of Oahu, the Navy said.
The ship’s search-and-rescue swimmer recovered Hunter, who was unconscious and not breathing. Crew administered CPR, but Hunter was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m., the Navy said.
Hunter enlisted in the Navy on Aug. 30, 2008, and was assigned to the Russell in January 2009. The Navy is investigating the incident.
Tourists injured by falling branch file suit
An elderly California couple is suing the landowner of a Waikiki outdoor bazaar, claiming they were injured when a branch from a large banyan tree fell on them.
Attorneys for the Rancho Palos Verdes couple filed the lawsuit Thursday against Queen Emma Land Co., owner of the International Marketplace. The lawsuit claims Russell Narahara broke his hip and his wife, Beverly, suffered a fractured skull when the 8-foot branch fell on them in February.
Attorney Wayne Kekina said Friday the tree is on a special registry that requires a permit for trimming. He says a permit was last obtained in 2010 and that the branch was dead for at least two years.
Queen Emma Land declined to comment.
Republicans field new Senate candidate
Eric Marshall, an information technology officer for a credit union, will run for a state Senate seat as a replacement candidate for a candidate who withdrew from the race, he said Friday.
Marshall, a Republican, will challenge Democratic incumbent Sen. Les Ihara Jr. for the 10th District seat (Moiliili-Kaimuki-Palolo). Douglas Lupton filed by Tuesday’s deadline as the GOP candidate for that seat but subsequently withdrew his candidacy.
Marshall is a former member of the Moiliili and McCully Neighborhood Board. He is an IT/compliance officer at Hawaiian Electric Employees Federal Credit Union.
