Bear that escaped Alaska center found shot to death

ANCHORAGE, Alaska >> A 2-year-old, 300-pound Kodiak brown bear that escaped from an Alaska wildlife center has been found shot to death just hours after its companion was shipped to a zoo in Sweden.

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center said in a release that it received reports that a bear resembling Shaguyik (SHA’-guy-uk), or Shaggy, was found in Portage, directly across the Seward Highway from the center. Shaguyik escaped from the center about 40 miles south of Anchorage in early April.

Officials confirmed it was the same bear by scanning a microchip Wednesday evening.

There were no immediate details on the shooting, which the center planned to report to Alaska Wildlife Troopers.

Both Shaguyik and Taquoka, her companion, were destined for Sweden. The orphaned bears were rescued from Kodiak Island in November 2010.
