Take your best shot during sports fair
Firearms enthusiasts and their families looking for some Father’s Day fun can enjoy shooting a variety of guns today at the annual Shooting Sports Fair at the Koko Head Shooting Complex.
The event runs between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and is sponsored by the Hawaii Rifle Association.
Members of the public are invited to register at the range and attend a safety briefing before purchasing scrip to shoot any of the various weapons.
Firearms available include air guns, cowboy firearms, big-game rifles, machine guns, and military small arms dating back to the Civil War.
Eye and ear protection is mandatory and will be available for purchase at the fair.
Brush fires on 2 islands quickly put out
A brush fire in the coastal Hanapepe area was under control less than two hours after it flared up, the Kauai County Fire Department reported Saturday.
The fire posed no threat to people or buildings, but county rangers did help evacuate a few people, the department reported.
The call came in at 12:09 p.m., and the fire was contained to about 20 acres on the Hanapepe Bay side of the Port Allen airport by 1:30 p.m., the department said. The fire was out less than an hour later.
On Maui Friday, firefighters quickly extinguished a small brush fire at a Waiehu home.
Maui Fire Chief Lee Mainaga said the fire burned a 25-foot-by-50-foot area of brush and tall grass behind a house at 858 Hoomau St.
The fire was extinguished at 1:47 p.m.
Maui economy benefited from movie remake
WAILUKU, Maui » Maui officials are touting a remake of a 1980 movie largely filmed on the island as providing jobs and boosting the local economy.
"Blue Lagoon: The Awakening" premiered Saturday on the Lifetime Network.
County officials say more than 30 Maui residents were hired to work as crew members, with jobs including electrical work, set safety and stunt coordinators.
During filming in May and earlier this month, actors and crew members stayed at local hotels, providing more than 450 room nights in South Maui.
A large portion of the movie was filmed at various locations from Makena to Paia to Twin Falls.
