Two students were found to have a dormant and non-contagious form of tuberculosis after a student who attended both Hawaii Pacific University and Kapiolani Community College was diagnosed with active tuberculosis, the state Health Department said today.

Health officials did not say which schools the two students with non-contagious TB attended.

After the student with active tuberculosis was diagnosed, health officials in March sent emails to 210 students and faculty who shared the same classroom with the ill student to inform them of the exposure and the need to be tested, health officials said. Out of the students and faculty, 108 reported for evaluation. 

No new related cases of active TB have been identified, health officials said.

"Our investigation has shown that this patient was not highly infectious," said Dr. Richard Brostrom, chief of the Health Department’s tuberculosis control branch. "We appreciate the cooperation of the students and faculty that were potentially exposed, as well as our successful collaboration with the two colleges." 

Health officials conducted eight days of on-campus testing at both campuses at no cost to the people who were exposed, health officials said.
