Kim makes quarters of Women’s Publix
Former Hawaii resident Kyung Kim won two matches Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the USGA Women’s Amateur Public Links in Neshanic Station, N.J.
Kim, who lives in Chandler, Ariz., beat Taiwan’s Yi Chen Liu 2-1 in the Round of 32 and Rachel Morris, of Carlsbad, Calif., 2-1 in the Round of 16.
Kim will play Lakareber Abe, of Angleton, Texas, in today’s quarterfinal.
Honolulu’s Allisen Corpuz beat Taiwan’s Chieh Peng 3 and 2, then fell to Kim Kaufman, of Clark, S.D., 2 and 1 in the Round of 16.
Kristina Merkle, also of Honolulu, lost to Thailand’s Pailin Ruttanasupagid 7 and 5 in the Round of 32.
Ching a third-team PING All-American
University of San Diego senior Alex Ching, a Punahou School alum, has been named to the 2012 Division I PING All-America third team.
Ching, a two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year, had a team-best scoring average of 70.82 (39 rounds).
He took medalist honors at the San Diego Intercollegiate and Fresno State Lexus Classic.
Ching was named USD’s co-Torero Male Athlete of the Year.
Fujikawa tied for 89th on eGolf Tour
Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa shot a 2-over-par 73 for the second consecutive day and likely won’t make the cut at the eGolf Tour’s Spring Creek Classic in Gordonsville, Va.
Fujikawa is tied for 89th among 138 golfers at 4-over 146. Second-round play was suspended due to darkness with 12 players still on the course.
Atlanta’s Adam Mitchell and Seamus Power of Waterford, Ireland, are tied for the lead at 11-under 131.
