Lopes headlines Newell’s Big Man Camp
Former Chaminade basketball coach Merv Lopes again headlines his free youth clinic in association with the Pete Newell Big Man Camp this month at Manoa Recreation Center. The clinic runs from July 26-27 and 30-31. Sessions for boys and girls, ages 14-16, are 8:30-11 a.m. with sessions for ages 16-18 and college players 2-4:30 p.m. Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon through Monday at the Manoa Recreation Center. Volleyball teams shine at junior nationals
Ka Ulukoa returned to Hawaii with three medals, and Outrigger Canoe Club one after competing in last week’s Boys Junior National Championships in Dallas.
In boys 13 club, Ka Ulukoa I lost to Puerto Rico’s Borinquen Coqui 25-8, 25-15 in the gold medal match. Team members were Kupono Browne, Timothy Chang, Jacob Chouljian, Antonio Cortez Feria and Ryan Hong. Also, Connor McCorriston, Jameson McKibbin, Kyler Sakamoto, James Scott, Ryan Wilcox and coach James Lambe.
Ka Ulukoa II earned the bronze with a 25-19, 25-21 win over Southside. Team members were Robert Allen Brayden Batungbacal, Kanalu Demello, Hookela Hanohano and Christian Harvey. Also Braden Kimura, Eric Kiemmer, Shawn Kobayashi, Kala‘i Leopoldo, Dru Pang, Larson Tuileta and coach Sava James Agpoon.
In boys 14 club, Outrigger earned the bronze medal when sweeping Gigantes of Puerto Rico, 25-18, 25-16. Team members were Todd Gruebner, Hunter Johnson, Ka‘ea Lum, Andrew Martinson, Kainoa Quindica, Matthew Saffery, Wil Stanley, Rohan Watumull and coach Jon Stanley.
Ka Ulukoa went 11-0 in the 16 boys open to win its fifth consecutive gold medal. The team hasn’t dropped a match in five years. Members were Austin Amian, Daniel Andrews, Skylan Engleman, Evan Enriques, Adrian Failtaila, Noa Hayashida, Micah Ma‘a, Keenan Meyer, Tui Tuileta and coach Pono Ma‘a.
Missing out on the medal round when finishing fifth were Ka Ulukoa 14s open and Outrigger 13s club.
Futsal at Dragon Boat Festival
Hawaii Street Soccer hosts its annual 5-on-5 futsal tournament in conjunction with the Dragon Boat Festival, July 28-29, at Ala Moana Beach Park. The adult premier division will be vying for $1,000. Masters qualify for summer meets
Three members of the Hawaii Masters Track Club will be competing in the Nationals Masters Track Meet, Aug. 2-5, at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill.
Jack Karbens, Ron Pate and Bob Barry reached qualifying standards through local meets. Barry, a discus thrower, also will compete at the Chicagoland Throws series July 28 in Chicago.
Tinman deadline nears
Wednesday is the mailing deadline for the 32nd Tinman triathlon on July 29.
Entry fees are $105 per individual and $145 for three-person teams. The event starts at 5:45 a.m. and consists of a 750-meter swim off Queen’s Beach; a 40K bike leg from Kapiolani Park to Hawaii Kai and back; and a 10K run around Diamond Head.
Walk-in entries will be accepted through July 25 at The Bike Shop, 1149 South King St. Online registration is available at active.com until July 22.
