Honolulu firefighters are battling a wildfire in the Kaena Point State Park above Keawaula, also known as Yokohama Bay, that has blackened approximately 500 acres of brush and grass.

The fire, initially reported just before 3:30 a.m. near restrooms at the park, spread up the flank of a ridge then into the mountain cliffs.

According to a Honolulu Fire Department release, the fire was 80 percent contained as of early this evening.

The fire advanced within 400 yards the Kaena Point Satellite Tracking Station but has not damaged any of the facility’s property or interrupted operations. It also burned around several utility poles but did not disrupt power service.

HFD is being assisted by federal firefighters as well as the Honolulu Police Department, the Department of Emergency Management and the Red Cross Hawaii Chapter.

According to HFD, firefighters have been hampered by a limited water supply, steep and uneven terrain, strong wins and high temperatures.

Firefighters are expected to remain on scene until dark to protect the tracking facility and power lines and to attempt to completely contain the blaze.
