Man sues Maui police for buttock gunshot wound

WAILUKU, Hawaii >> A lawsuit claims a man suffered a traumatic gunshot wound to his buttock by Maui police officers.

Anthony Lum-John claims officers used excessive force by shooting at a truck he was riding in two years ago.

The Maui News reported Friday the 19-year-old’s lawsuit claims the bullet can’t be dislodged or removed.

Named as defendants are the county, the police department and Officers Jun Hattori, Russell Kapahulehua, Erik Losvar and Harry Matsuura.

Another lawsuit against the same defendants was filed last year by Joshua Nakagawa, who was riding in the truck’s bed with Lum-John when police fired 15 rounds.

Police were responding to a report of gunshots fired at a beach gathering.

The lawsuits say Nakagawa and Lum-John were innocent bystanders.

The county says police used appropriate force.
