Chan 6 back at Pacific Coast Amateur
Hawaii’s Lorens Chan is tied for fourth place, six shots out of first, going into today’s final round of the 46th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship. Taeksoo Kim and David Fink have a share of 10th, eight shots behind leader Jarred Bossio.
The tournament invites 80 of the world’s top amateurs from the United States and Canada. It is at the Bandon Trails and Bandon Dunes courses on the Oregon coast.
Chan, an ‘Iolani graduate headed to UCLA on a golf scholarship, shared the lead after an opening-round 70. He was one back going into the third round and fired a 6-over-par 76 Thursday, for a total of 219.
Kim, a Boise State senior out of Wailuku, shot 71 to move into the Top 10 at 221. He is tied with Fink, who was in second place at the turn Thursday, but played the back nine in 6-over and shot a 75.
Fink, another ‘Iolani graduate who is about to start his senior year at Oregon State, was part of the winning Morse Cup team. The competition is held the first two rounds of the Pacific Coast Amateur. Fink, Matt Rawitzer and Carl Johnson made up the Pacific Northwest Golf Association team, which shot 291 to win by a shot over Washington.
Chaminade to open against Texas on Maui
Chaminade will face Texas in the first round of the 2012 EA Sports Maui Invitational basketball tournament, which will be held Nov. 19-21 at the Lahaina Civic Center on Maui.
The Silverswords-Longhorns matchup on Nov. 19 will be broadcast at 4:30 p.m. Hawaii time on ESPNU.
The other first-round matchups are Butler vs. Marquette at 10:30 a.m., Mississippi State vs. North Carolina at 1 p.m., and USC vs. Illinois at 7 p.m. The three games will be broadcast on ESPN2.
All 12 tournament games will be broadcast on either ESPNU, ESPN or ESPN2.
Wahine hoops camp Aug. 11-12
The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team will conduct summer camp sessions on Aug. 11 and 12 at Klum Gym and Gym 1 for males and females ages 5 to 18.
The camp costs $50 for one day for either three or four hours of instruction, depending on age. Strength and conditioning stations, nutritional education and academic components were added to the curriculum taught in June’s Wahine camps. A T-shirt and basketball will be provided.
