Sister Regina Catherine Brandt, a Catholic school teacher and principal in Hawaii for more than 25 years, died July 12 in St. Louis. She was 102.
Brandt came to Hawaii in 1939 and started at St. Theresa School in Honolulu where for 12 years she taught third and fourth grade, as well as junior high.
In 1951 she moved on to St. Joseph School in Waipahu and taught sixth grade for two years before being named principal. After her time at St. Joseph, she held principal positions at St. Anthony School in Kailua and St. Theresa’s School in Liliha.
Her last Hawaii assignment was in 1964 as an education consultant and associate superintendent at the Catholic School Department.
Born in St. Louis, Brandt joined the Sisters of St. Joseph on Sept. 8, 1930, and took the vow to live an active vocation of prayer and service on Aug. 15, 1936.
She began her teaching career as a third- and fourth-grade teacher at Sacred Heart School in Indianapolis before coming to the islands.
She held more teaching and principal positions after returning to the mainland in 1967.
She retired to the Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis in 1992 and spent her last years there, ministering in prayer and witness.
A funeral was held July 16 at the Nazareth Living Center Chapel.
