Training offered for community project planning
The Maui County Volunteer Center will hold training for community project planning on Aug. 10.
The training workshops will take place at Cafe Ole at the Dunes from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes facilitators from Pacific Facilitation and Leadership, refreshments, giveaways and project awards.
The training is intended for teams of two to eight people who have a project idea to address problems in their communities, county officials said.
Realistic group ideas will be evaluated for awards to help support projects.

Thefts of cars, mo-peds jump in West Hawaii
Hawaii County police are warning the public that there has been a rash of auto and mo-ped thefts in West Hawaii in recent weeks.
The auto thieves seem to be targeting Honda sedans, Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks and mo-peds, but other vehicles have also been stolen. Since July 1, police have investigated 25 cases of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.
Police advise the public to lock vehicle doors, even those parked in a private driveway. It takes only a few minutes to steal a car left unattended and unlocked, police said.
Police ask that anyone with information about who might be responsible for these thefts call Detective Sean Smith at 326-4646, ext. 262, or the police nonemergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters may call CrimeStoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona.
