2 Kapaa residents killed after van careens out of control on Kauai

A 31-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, both of Kapaa, were killed, and three other people were injured when the van they were traveling in went out of control and crashed into a tree early Saturday morning near Nawiliwili, Kauai police said.

Driver Christopher Santiago and passenger Eryn O’Shaughnessy were both pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

According to police, the van was traveling downhill on Rice Street just past Mokoi Street about 2:00 a.m. when it hit a guardrail, careened across the road, ran up the hill on the left side of the road, traveled back across the road, down an embankment and struck a tree.

A 21-year-old woman passenger was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital then medevaced to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu where she remained in critical condition Saturday night, police said.

A 27-year-old male passenger from Kapaa was taken to Wilcox in serious condition and later released; and a 24-year-old female passenger was transported to Wilcox in serious condition and remained in the hospital in stable condition Saturday night.
