A 62-year-old man died Sunday morning after experiencing heart problems while hiking the Stairway to Heaven trail, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.  

The call came in around 3:55 a.m., and fire rescue personnel hiked up to the man’s location and performed CPR on him while remaining in contact with emergency medical services via radio, Fire Capt. Gary Lum said. 

Lum said once the sun came up and heavy cloud cover in the area reduced, the hiker was airlifted out and transported to a local hospital around 7 a.m.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital, Honolulu police said.
