Kauai van crash kills 2, injures 3
A 31-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, both of Kapaa, were killed, and three other people were injured when the van they were traveling in went out of control and crashed into a tree early Saturday morning near Nawiliwili, Kauai police said.
Driver Christopher Santiago and passenger Eryn O’Shaughnessy were both pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
According to police, the van was traveling downhill on Rice Street just past Mokoi Street about 2 a.m. when it hit a guardrail, careened across the road, ran up the hill on the left side of the road, then traveled back across the road, down an embankment and struck a tree.
Another female passenger was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital then taken by medevac to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu where she remained in critical condition, police said. Two other passengers, a male and a female, are hospitalized at Wilcox in serious condition.
Stabbing of 2 in Nanakuli leads to arrest
Police arrested a 27-year-old Makaha man Saturday morning after a stabbing left a 15-year-old boy and a woman injured in Nanakuli.
Police said the man stabbed the boy after a fight broke out between several people about 4 a.m. The woman was also stabbed.
Officers found the man a short distance away and arrested him at Helelua Street and Farrington Highway for investigation of two counts of second-degree attempted murder. He remained at the police cellblock awaiting charges Saturday.
An Emergency Medical Services supervisor said the boy was taken to the hospital in serious condition and the woman was taken with minor injuries to a hospital in Waianae.
A witness said the incident happened in a parking lot of a townhouse complex on Helelua. The boy, who lives nearby, was stabbed in the back when he tried to help a girl who was being attacked by an older male during a fight, the witness said. The three people attacking the boy fled, he said.
A woman who was with the attacker was cut on the lower leg and had to get eight stitches before she was released from the hospital, the witness said.
Motorcyclist is critically hurt in accident
A motorcyclist was taken to a hospital in critical condition Saturday afternoon after a crash on Sand Island Access Road.
The accident happened about 3:40 p.m. Police contraflowed traffic on the road between the University of Hawaii Marine Center and the Coast Guard station because of the crash. The road was reopened after 5 p.m.
Pearl City man was pedestrian victim
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office identified Saturday the man who died after being hit by a van in Waimalu on Thursday night as Ruffy Paguirigan of Pearl City.
Police said Paguirigan, 34, was crossing Kamehameha Highway in a marked crosswalk near Neal Blaisdell Park when he was struck by a 1996 Nissan Quest van, driven by a 36-year-old Pearl City man.
Paguirigan had head and internal injuries and was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, according to police. He died at the hospital Friday evening. An autopsy will be performed Monday.
Molotov cocktails found during traffic stop
An officer discovered two Molotov cocktails in the front seat of a vehicle after a routine traffic stop in Ewa Beach and arrested the driver, police said.
The officer pulled the 33-year-old man over at about 5 p.m. Friday at Kalapu and Komana streets on a routine traffic stop and noticed two open bottles next to the driver. At first, the bottles appeared to be beer, but upon closer inspection the officer noticed they were explosive devices, police said.
The man did not give police an address. Police arrested him for possession of a prohibited explosive device and two outstanding arrest warrants.
Man suspected of theft and drug offenses
Police arrested a 48-year-old Chinatown man who allegedly stole a vehicle from a used-car lot.
Officers stopped the man in Waialua for excessive speeding and discovered a glass pipe and what appeared to be methamphetamine in his vehicle at about 12:45 p.m. Friday, police said. He was arrested near Farrington Highway and Mount Kaala Road for investigation of car theft and two drug offenses.
