Man dies on hike up Stairway to Heaven
A 62-year-old man died Sunday morning after experiencing heart problems while hiking the Stairway to Heaven trail, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.
Fire rescue personnel who were called just before 4 a.m. hiked up to the man’s location and performed CPR on him while remaining in contact with emergency medical services via radio, Fire Capt. Gary Lum said.
Lum said once the sun came up and heavy cloud cover in the area reduced, the hiker was airlifted out and transported to a local hospital around 7 a.m. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.
He apparently had been intending to watch the sunrise from the summit. The stairway has been off limits for years, with the trail head fenced off by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, but hikers routinely ignore the restrictions.

Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Gary Lum said the rental company that operated the watercraft brought the injured riders back to the boat ramp, where they were met by emergency medical personnel.
Zip-line employee crashes into customer
A 60-year-old visitor from Nebraska was injured Sunday afternoon during an attempted zip-line rescue on Maui.
The man was on the zip line when he apparently got stuck just before 3 p.m. A Flyin Hawaiian Zipline employee trying to help the man hit him on the line, causing a laceration to the man’s head and other injuries.
Both the visitor and the employee were able to make it to a tower next to the Kahili Golf Course, where they were met by Maui Fire Department personnel just before 4 p.m.
Both were airlifted to a landing site and then transported by paramedics to a local hospital.
Attempted murder suspected in collision
A collision Saturday night on Kalanianaole Highway near Kaai Street left three people injured and another person in police custody.
The collision, which occurred at about 10:15 p.m., closed westbound lanes on the highway for nearly five hours, prompting police to open a contra-flow lane.
Police are investigating reports that two parties involved in the crash had been arguing at another location before the accident.
Paramedics transported a 21-year-old man to an area hospital in critical condition. A woman and another man, both reportedly in their 20s, were also taken to the hospital, but their conditions were undisclosed.
Police arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the crash.
Speed and alcohol may have been factors, according to police.
