Ceremony to observe Hiroshima
An annual peace bell-ringing ceremony today will mark the 67th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.
On Aug. 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, leading to Japan’s surrender and the end of World War II.
The ceremony at Izumo Taishakyo Mission will include an announcement about a new Hiroshima exhibit at Pearl Harbor. Pacific Historic Parks is expected to announce details of a donation by the family of Sadako Sasaki, who was 2 years old when the bomb dropped and died at 12 years old of leukemia.
Mayor Peter Carlisle is scheduled to speak at the ceremony.
In 1985 the Hiroshima Prefectural Government gave Hawaii a replica of the Hiroshima Peace Bell.

Ranch donates land for park
Parker Ranch will donate to Hawaii County 24 acres for a district park in Waimea.
West Hawaii Today reported Friday that the land is on the Mauna Kea side of the new Waimea bypass.
Parks and Recreation Director Bob Fitzgerald said the next steps will be permitting and getting funding. He said he did not know how much the full park would cost to build.
The park will include two football or soccer fields and a youth baseball field, ranch officials said. Plans also envision a community gymnasium, parking and gathering areas.
The county will also need to build an access road, said Nahua Guilloz, ranch corporate secretary.
The ranch has the option of giving the county another 26 acres to expand the park, officials said.
