A strong earthquake off Alaska this morning is not expected to generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials said today.

The 6.2 magnitude quake struck at 10:37 a.m. near the epicenter (8:37 a.m. in Hawaii) and was centered 61 miles east-southeast of Nikolski in the Aleutian Islands, at a depth of about 12 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, said a tsunami was not expected.
