The fifth Biggest Little Airshow takes flight from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 and 19 at the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island.

Aviation enthusiasts will be able to see 100 aircraft on the tarmac — both real and remote-controlled models — as well as take free tours of Hangar 79, which is home to the new "MiG Alley" Korean War and Flying Tigers exhibits.

For two days, pilots will maneuver their remote-controlled planes in aerobatic flights in the skies above the museum. Expect to see jets, helicopters, F-22s, warbirds, B-17s, Corsairs and more.

Flyovers of antique aircraft, including Hawaiian Airlines’ Bellanca and Pacific Warbirds’ T-6 and Luscomb 8-E, are scheduled at noon.

Keiki will also enjoy "candy bombings" over historic Luke Field at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. each day, in addition to live music, food, beverages and free drawings.

Admission to the air show is free, but tickets are required for the museum. Shuttles depart every 15 minutes from Pearl Harbor Visitor Center.

Name zoo’s warthogs and win a prize package

The Honolulu Zoo is hosting a contest to name the three baby warthogs, two females and one male, that were born May 8. Contest entry forms are available at the zoo’s main snack bar.

A committee of zoo mammal keepers will select the winning names, and an announcement will be made on the zoo’s Facebook page Sept. 3.

For the best opportunities to see the warthogs, zoo officials advise visiting in the early morning or late afternoon.

The zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. The warthogs are in their exhibit until 3 p.m. daily.

The winner, who will name all three animals, will receive a family membership to the zoo, a $25 gift card for the concession stand and a behind-the-scenes tour including the opportunity to feed the giraffes.

Genetic exploration awaits students at UH

Are you raising a scientific "gene-ius"?

The University of Hawaii’s Biotechnology Outreach Program has developed a curriculum of classes that explores themes such as DNA, agriculture and forensics.

"Gene-iuses on a Mission," a two-hour program for elementary-age children, allows students to explore science-related activities. Each session, which is organized by grade levels (1-3 and 4-6), is held from 10 a.m. to noon and repeats 2 to 4 p.m. Parents can opt to join their children or drop them off for the session.

On Aug. 18, "Plants to the Rescue" will be featured. "DNA Detectives" will be the focus on Sept. 15 and Oct. 6; and "Buzz Off!" on Oct. 20 and Nov. 17.

Take your pet to church day

The congregation of Christ Lutheran Church in Mililani welcomes pets of all kinds to its annual pet blessing, which takes place Aug. 19 during its 10:30 a.m. service.

Presiding pastor David Kieffer will be present for the blessing, which has included dogs, cats, fish, goats, chickens and pigs.

Meet Hello Kitty at Yogurtland

Yogurtland will give away free frozen yogurt at the Waikiki location from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 21. Hello Kitty will be there to meet people and take photographs in celebration of the launch of a partnership between Yogurtland and Sanrio.

Special Badtz-Maru cups and spoons will be distributed, while supplies last. Limited-edition merchandise will be sold at Yogurtland locations, including a Hello Kitty Plush doll ($13.50), through September.
