Hawaii golfers do not make match play
All four Hawaii golfers failed to advance from qualifying Tuesday at the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship, being played in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
Haiku’s Justin Keiley came closest, rallying to shoot a second-round 68 on the par-70 CommonGround Course. He finished at 5-over-par 146, in a tie for 100th. The top 64 advanced to match play. The highest qualifying score was 143.
Honolulu’s Lorens Chan and Wailuku’s Taeksoo Kim both shot 75—147. Pukalani’s Alex Chiarella finished at 75—153.
The medalist was University of Alabama All-American Bobby Wyatt, who closed with a 68 for a total of 132, which tied the tournament’s scoring record.
Shoji to help with ‘Iolani volleyball clinic
Kawika Shoji, the former ‘Iolani and Stanford star, will be an instructor at a volleyball clinic at ‘Iolani School on Saturday. The clinics are for boys and girls in grades 6-8 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. and for grades 9-12 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The cost is $25, with a $5 discount to ‘Iolani students.
BYUH is No. 20 in AVCA D-II poll
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s volleyball team is ranked 20th in the AVCA Division II Top 25 poll.
The Seasiders were given the highest ranking of any team that did not finish in the poll last season. They open at Concordia-St. Paul in Minnesota on Aug. 31.
Florida team stops Kapolei in softball
Windermere, Fla., defeated Kapolei 1-0 in a Little League Softball World Series semifinal game in Portland, Ore., on Tuesday in extra innings. Windermere scored in the top of the eighth to break a scoreless tie.
Keani Nahinu, Keelie Pak, Shannon Pascua-Stanton and Ciena Kauhi each had one hit for Kapolei, while pitcher Mahina Piilani went the distance and threw a five-hitter.
