A 36-year-old Navy man was hospitalized at Tripler Army Medical Center for observation Wednesday morning after he barricaded himself in his Radford Terrace duplex for nearly 11 hours.

The standoff on McCurry Place ended at about 3:35 a.m. and residents were allowed to return home at about 4:30 a.m.

The man’s wife called police at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and told officers her husband was despondent and possibly suicidal, said Honolulu Police  Maj. William Chur of the Kalihi district.

Residents were asked to voluntarily evacuate their homes.

Francis Reyes, who lives nearby, said officers came to his house about 8:30 p.m. and said he should leave for safety reasons. He took his two boys, 3 and 8, to a nearby friend’s house. 

"I got to take care of my kids," Reyes said. 

Other residents waited outside taped-off areas on Stowell Circle to go home. 

SWAT officers with the Honolulu Police Department had surrounded the home by 9 p.m., which had a porch light on and an American flag hanging outside. 

Chur said the man was alone and speaking to hostage negotiators. Police did not believe he had any firearms or explosives. He said about 30 officers responded. 

"These incidents can change. We’re just ready for anything," he said. 

“We treat these incidents very seriously just because we don’t know everything that’s going on," Chur said.
