Maui police are asking for the public’s help in finding the driver of a truck or SUV who drove away after hitting and killing a 31-year-old Maui woman Thursday night or Friday morning along Kahekili Highway in Waiehu.
The woman, identified as Brandy Mendes, was walking toward Waihee on the makai side of the highway when an unknown vehicle, traveling in the same direction, hit her between 7:40 p.m. Thursday and 5:49 a.m. Friday, Maui police said. The vehicle fled in the Waihee direction.
Mendes’ body was found lying along the shoulder of the highway shortly before 6 a.m. Friday, just south of Kamaile Street.
Police said the vehicle is a dark red metallic color and believed to be a Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra-type vehicle from the model years 1997 to 2002. It would likely have front-end damage and possibly a damaged or missing passenger-side headlight.
Maui police ask that anyone with information on the crash call CrimeStoppers at 242-6966.
