PERSONALITIES: Kanye West, the celebrated rapper, has been in town recording at the Island Sound Studios (formerly, Avex Honolulu Studios) on the waterfront in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center. That explains the presence of his main squeeze, Kim Kardashian, spotted shopping at nearby Longs Drugs the other day. Their togetherness is evident, too, in West’s newest music video, "I Wish You Would/Cold," where she’sthe one ‘neath that hoodie. And apparently the bond is thick: West’s latest tune, "Perfect Bitch," is about Kardashian. Or so he admitted in a tweet. …

Speaking of movement, that Na Ali‘i of Comedy ensemble, sans Ed Kaahea (who opted not to travel so he could do a play), had gigs in Las Vegas and Arizona. Augie T. recruited Mel Cabang, Andy Bumatai and Frank De Lima for a couple of shows but decided it was best to drive the distance — however, what he thought was a two-hour commute turned out to be five hours. In the heat. In a crowded vehicle. But imagine the laughter aboard. …
ITEMIZATIONS: She doesn’t sing, but songstress-actress Mary Gutzi will play an interrogator named Dobbs in the ABC pilot "Last Resort," premiering Sept. 27. "My character questions the wife of a submarine commander who has refused orders from the government," said Gutzi, whoalso did a subsequent episode and hopes Dobbs will recur. The Hawaii-filmed series stars Andre Braugher and Scott Speedman; directing the pilot was Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale," the Antonio Banderas "Zorro" flicks, "Green Lantern"). "I had a great time and feel so blessed for this opportunity," Dobbs said. "And they don’t know I sing!" …
Chef Ed Kenney of town and the soon-to-close Downtown restaurants was the lone Hawaii chef attending last month’s James Beard Foundation’s inaugural Chefs Boot Camp for Policy & Change. The pilot program, envisioned as a model for future gatherings, scrutinized safety, sustainability and other health issues.
Besides his two eateries, Kenney also operates Uptown, a catering business. What next, a neighbor isle restaurant called Out of Town? Kenney is also one of the culinary stars of the Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival Sept. 6-9. …
