DeMello is new KHON sports director
KHON weekend sports anchor and reporter Rob DeMello was promoted to sports director on Monday.
DeMello, the station’s weekend sports anchor for nearly three years, replaces Kanoa Leahey, who will continue as a part-time sports anchor on Mondays and Tuesdays. Leahey, KHON’s sports anchor since 2004, provides play-by-play for OC Sports and nationally for ESPN’s Diamond Head Classic coverage and co-hosts “Leahey and Leahey” with his father, veteran broadcaster Jim Leahey, on PBS Hawaii.
Former University of Hawaii baseball player Sam Spangler will join the station as sports producer and reporter. Spangler pitched for the Rainbows (2007-10) and played professionally for two years before returning to Hawaii to intern at KHON.
Bohn captures Hall of Fame title
Doug Bohn posted a final-round 79 to capture the Visa Hall of Fame Championship at the Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course on Monday.
Bohn, head pro at Kapalua’s Bay Course, fired a 4-under 71 in Sunday’s first round and tallied a two-day total of 150, outpacing Eliot Gouveia (77-75—152) and Kevin Ralbovsky (74-79—153).
Bohn took home the first-place check worth $2,000. Gouveia earned $1,500 and Ralbovsky won $900.
Kevin Hayashi captured the tournament’s senior division with a final-round 77 for a two-day total of 149. The Hilo Municipal Golf Course pro finished one stroke ahead of Jay Taise, Ron Castillo Jr. and Larry Stubblefield, who finished in a three-way tie at 150.
Hayashi earned $2,500 for the win, plus an additional $1,800 awarded for topping the field of the Aloha Senior Section Professional Championship, which was played in conjunction with the Hall of Fame Championship.
Hayashi’s win qualifies him for the Senior Professional National Championship, scheduled for Oct. 11-14 at Creighton Farms in Aldie, Va., and the River Creek Club in Leesburg, Va. Castillo and Taise will join Hayashi as the three Aloha Section representatives.
Bill Hunt (79-85—164) captured the Hall of Fame Super Senior division and claimed the $1,000 winner’s check.
Le leads OCC Women’s Invitational
Punahou’s Kristin Le leads the OCC Women’s Invitational after posting a first-round score of 32 on Monday.
Mira Han posted a 31 to trail Le by a point heading into today’s final round of the tournament, which uses the Stableford scoring system. Kapolei senior Sydney Maluenda sits in third after posting a 26.
Nancy Watanabe fired a 38 to lead the A flight, Jun Nishioka tallied a 37 to lead the B flight and Jo Ann Chun posted a 40 to lead the C flight.
