Isle dancers excel during world meet
Dancers associated with Waipahu’s Hypersquad studio did well in the U.S. finals of the World Hip-Hop Dance Championship held this month in Las Vegas.
The Blank Canvas crew, which includes former Hypersquad dancers, came in sixth in the U.S. adult championship division.
The studio’s all-girl Hype Rascals and Bandits took the gold in the junior and varsity championship divisions, respectively. In the "megacrew" division, Academy of Hype won the bronze medal.
None of the crews placed in the world finals.
Considered "the Olympics of hip-hop" and the largest dance competition of its kind, the championship featured 250 crews representing 43 countries.
The Hypersquad crews "brought excitement, character, personality and aloha" to the contest, said studio co-director Joshua Ulep.
