Public sex gets man in trouble again
HILO » A Hawaii island man has been arrested for public sex for the second time in about a month — this time with a different partner.
Police say 35-year-old Dylan Trask Whelden and 45-year-old Yvette Butterfield were caught having sex on a soccer field extension near downtown Hilo early Saturday. A police spokeswoman told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald there were people using the county park at the time.
They are charged with open lewdness. Whelden’s bail was set at $1,000, and bail was set for Butterfield at $2,000.
Whelden was charged with the same crime last month after police say he and Margaret Manza were caught having sex on a public sidewalk in front of a Kona business building.
Police use Taser to subdue man
A 64-year-old Glenwood man who allegedly threatened neighbors in Puna with a machete and barricaded himself in his house overnight Monday was subdued by county police using a Taser on Tuesday morning.
Police responded at 10:22 a.m. Monday to a report of the machete threat on Kokokahi Road in the Fern Forest subdivision. When officers arrived, they found the man barricaded in his house, claiming he had a large machine gun, police said.
Police blocked traffic on Kokokahi Road from 1 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday for public safety.
A Special Response Team negotiated with the man until he emerged at 5 a.m. Tuesday, police said. When the man failed to comply with police instructions, police used the Taser.
An officer received minor injuries when a stairway he was standing on collapsed, police said.
Police recovered a .22-caliber air rifle and another weapon, but no automatic weapons were found. The man was arrested on suspicion of terroristic threatening.
Wildfire mostly contained
Firefighters contained about 85 percent of a 3,000-acre Kauai wildfire Tuesday that has cut electricity and closed roads to Kokee.
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative hoped to restore power to 130 customers late Tuesday. Waimea Canyon Road was reopened Tuesday, but Kokee Road remained closed. The Kauai County Water Department has asked Kekaha residents to restrict water use until power can be restored to a water tank in the area.
