Stamp your way to a winning design
Feeling creative? "Stamp Aloha," a card-making contest hosted by Ben Franklin Crafts, is seeking entries through Sept. 3.
Contestants are asked to create a card design using stamps from one of the following local stamp companies: Rubber Stamp Plantation, Dandelion Designs and Sister Stamps.
Stamps from other companies may be incorporated so long as the locally made stamps are the focal point of the card.
Entry forms are available at www.benfranklinhawaii.com.
Entries will be posted on the Ben Franklin Facebook page.
Winners will be announced Sept. 17 and receive a prize pack of paper, stamps and a $25 Ben Franklin gift card.
Space project needs girls to participate
Girl Scouts of Hawai‘i is offering high school girls an opportunity to design, build and launch a computer-controlled space science project.
Called "Design It! Build It! Launch It! The International Space Station Project," the yearlong program is open to girls enrolled in ninth to 12th grade during the 2012-2013 school year.
Participants will work together to conceive, develop and test a science experiment called a MicroLab, starting in early September.
The MicroLab, along with other experiments from high schools nationwide, will be delivered to the International Space Station in March.
Data will be downloaded from an astronaut’s laptop after one month at the station and sent to Earth for evaluation by the team.
Participants can be involved in electrical, mechanical, software and testing work or public relations. Weekly workshops will take place on Saturdays from September through November at the Girl Scouts of Hawai‘i offices at Ala Moana Hotel, with monthly meetings to follow.
The program fee is $550 per girl (with need-based financial aid available). Being a Girl Scout is not required.
Applications can be downloaded at www.girlscouts-hawaii.org and must be submitted by Friday.
Call Melissa Torres-Laing at 675-5514 to inquire about the program.
