A 27-year-old Hanalei woman was arrested Wednesday night for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant after crashing her car at a road construction site along Kuhio Highway, Kauai police said.

About 11:15 p.m., the woman was driving north on the highway at a high rate of speed near the Hanalei police substation, when her Hyundai struck a plastic traffic barrier, police said. Her car then struck a light tower before colliding into a front loader.

The driver was not injured but her car sustained major front-end damage.

Upon failing a  field sobriety test, the woman was arrested for a drunken driving offense and transported to police cellblock.

Because of this incident, Kauai police are reminding residents to follow construction zone speed limits at all times, and not only during construction hours, according to a county news release.
