Kauai County settles harassment complaint from white lawyer

LIHUE >> The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says Kauai County will pay $120,000 to settle a federal case claiming a white lawyer was subjected to racial harassment.

The federal agency announced the settlement today. Kauai officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

A former attorney in the county prosecuting attorney’s office filed a discrimination complaint in 2010. She alleged that as a white woman, she was harassed because of her race by a top-level manager.  She claimed the manager made disparaging comments that she needed to assimilate into local culture and date a local man.

The agency found reasonable cause to believe the county violated harassment law.

In addition to monetary compensation, the county agrees to establish policies to address discrimination and harassment in the workplace.
