What a way to score your first career goal.
Senior midfielder Christy Watanabe was golden in the second minute of overtime, sending the Hawaii women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Detroit on Sunday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
At the midpoint of the season, UH (5-1-2) equaled its win total from 2011 while clinching the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic title.
Of course, it came with the usual dose of drama to which this team is accustomed.
The Wahine, sloppy at the outset, trailed the Titans 1-0 from the 51st minute until the 80th, when forward Tiana Fujimoto equalized with her team-best sixth goal on a cross by Karli Look.
By the sudden-death OT period, momentum was fully behind the hosts as Watanabe flanked Fujimoto on the attack for her first score since starring at Roosevelt.
After receiving a header from Krystal Pascua, Watanabe juked a defender at the top of the box and threaded the ball into the right corner of the net, past Titans goalkeeper Nora Abolins.
"I just gathered that second ball, and I was honestly going to try to play it to Tiana … but I saw the hole close and I was just like, ‘Hmph, I just gotta be the woman and go for it,’ so I did, and it worked out," a smiling Watanabe said.
The seven straight unbeaten games tied a UH record, last accomplished in 2004. UH’s 11 straight home games without a loss is one off the team record.
In UH’s fourth straight OT match against a Division I opponent, the Wahine gained steam late as Detroit (2-4-1) of the Horizon League sputtered. Goalkeeper Kanani Taaca was named tournament MVP after saving 10 shots in two games.
"This was absolutely what we needed," UH coach Michele Nagamine said. "We were in a bit of a rut right now. … The kids have been put in some pretty emotional, trying situations since the beginning of the season. Four (consecutive) games of overtime?
"I do have to credit my team for pulling themselves out of that hole."
UH now heads on the road for its next four matches, not including the alumnae game on Sept. 23. Up next are games at Washington State (Friday) and Eastern Washington (Sunday).
Detroit, which tied Ball State 1-1 the night before, got a goal from Haley Burtraw near the start of the second half. But the Titans looked gassed late in the match when the Wahine made their push; UH outshot Detroit 18-9 in total.
"You could look at fatigue as a factor in that, but you gotta give them credit," Detroit coach Mike Lupenec said. "They were pushing late in the game. They were creating opportunities. If you sit back against good teams like that, they’re going to punish you."
