Pilot owes free flight time as penalty for deer transport

A judge ordered helicopter pilot Thomas Hauptman to provide a Hawaii Island group trying to eradicate axis deer with 500 hours of helicopter flight time as part of his punishment for illegally flying deer to that island. Attorney Phillip Lowenthal, left, and Hauptman left federal court in Honolulu on Thursday after Hauptman was sentenced in the case.
