Toddler who died after being found in ocean identified

A 1-year-old boy who died Saturday after he wandered into the ocean near Haleiwa Saturday has been identified.

The Medical Examiner’s office has identified the apparent drowning victim as Coby Trask.

The boy was found unresponsive at a beach off Ka Waena Road, near the Rock Piles surf spot, just before 6 p.m., Fire Department spokesman Capt. Carlton Yamada said. He was transferred to Kahuku Medical Center in extremely critical condition and pronounced dead at 7:22 p.m., according to police reports.

HFD received the initial call at 5:56 p.m. People at the beach found the child underwater. An off-duty lifeguard performed CPR on the unresponsive boy until firefighters arrived at 6:02 p.m.

Yamada said the toddler apparently wandered into the ocean.

Firefighters continued CPR until paramedics arrived and transported the child, still unresponsive, to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, Yamada said.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause of death.
