Toddler dies after being pulled from sea
A 1-year-old boy died Saturday after he was found in the ocean near Haleiwa on Saturday.
The boy was found unresponsive at a beach off Ke Waena Road, near the Rock Piles surf spot, just before 6 p.m., Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Carlton Yamada said. He was transferred to Kahuku Medical Center in extremely critical condition and pronounced dead at 7:22 p.m., according to police reports.
Yamada said the toddler apparently wandered into the ocean.
HFD received the initial call at 5:56 p.m. People at the beach found the child underwater. An off-duty lifeguard performed CPR on the unresponsive boy until firefighters arrived at 6:02 p.m. Firefighters continued CPR until paramedics arrived and transported the child, still unresponsive, to the hospital, Yamada said.
Motorcycle rider critically injured in crash
A 37-year-old Mililani woman sustained critical injuries Sunday after crashing her motorcycle in the Mililani Tech Park area, police said.
The woman apparently lost control of the motorcycle on Wikao Street sometime before noon, and it then hit a curb and then a tree, police said.
A bystander who did not see the crash found her unresponsive on the ground and called for help, according to Emergency Medical Services. She suffered head trauma and was transported in critical condition to a hospital.
The woman had been wearing a helmet, police said.
Worker treated after fire damages dryer
Paramedics treated a worker at the Hale Ho‘omalu Juvenile Detention Facility in Kapolei after a fire damaged a gas-powered dryer Saturday night.
Fire Capt. Carlton Yamada said a woman in her 30s who had a prior asthma condition required medical attention after the 9:08 p.m. fire at 287 Kamokila Blvd.
Yamada said the fire was confined to the commercial dryer and its contents. Damage was estimated at $2,500.
Man arrested in driver’s robbery, assault
Police arrested a 59-year-old man for allegedly robbing a 54-year-old taxicab driver early Saturday morning in Waikiki.
Police said the man refused to pay a $20 cab fare, then allegedly punched the driver in the face twice.
When officers arrived, the man resisted arrested and caused minor injury to an officer, police said.
The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. Saturday at Kaiulani and Kalakaua avenues.
Bank heist suspect linked to other crime
A man arrested on suspicion of robbing a Kailua bank may also be responsible for another robbery, police said.
Police on Thursday arrested a 31-year-old man with no local address for allegedly robbing the Kailua branch of Hawaii National Bank on Sept. 7.
While in custody, police determined the man was also a suspect in the robbery of a Kaneohe financial institution, Advance Til Payday, and arrested him for investigation of that crime.
