Florida’s Kelly Slater won the 50th World Championship Tour contest of his career Thursday by taking down Australia’s Joel Parkinson in the finals of the Hurley Pro.

Slater put up a two-wave score of 16.50 in clean 3- to 5-foot surf at Lower Trestles in California. Parkinson finished at 14.00.

"It’s cool to win the 50th here," Slater said on the Association of Surfing Professionals website. "I won my first event as a pro here and it’s great to get this win."

The North Shore’s John John Florence finished equal fifth, falling in the quarterfinals to Brazilian Adriano de Souza, 12.60-11.60.

Mick Fanning of Australia sits atop the WCT rankings with four events to go. He’s followed by Parkinson, Slater, Florence and de Souza.

The tour wraps up in December at Pipeline.
